Eight Feng Shui Points for the Holidays

By Mary Jane Kasliner, AAS, BS, ACFSI, CP, ERYT200

It's that time of year again when things can get a bit hectic, schedules are thrown off, and tensions are flying high. So how can feng shui help to calm the waters this holiday season? Well, let's begin by assessing how the energy is shifted in your space.

Point 1 ~ Family Time

Invariably holiday time means family time. Albeit family can be fun, they can also bring in their share of stress. Why not diffuse any potential arguments from the beginning by supporting the family sector in the home.  Find the east portent and infuse it with water and wood elements.  Prop a few photos of the family together enjoying each other. Now do the same on a microcosm level by finding the east portent in the room you are planning on entertaining in for the holidays. Every time you pass by these areas you will be reminded of how much fun it can be to spend time with family.

Points 2 & 3 ~ Where’s all the Money Going?

Let’s face it, between the purchasing of gifts, wrapping paper, holiday cards, and let’s not forget all the food – there is a great deal of money flying out of your wallet. Even though every year we promise ourselves we are not going to spend as much as last year, we end up doing just that. Why not generate a little extra income to offset those expenses this year with some feng shui. Locate the northwest portent of the home and make sure it’s in good shape – no clutter or anything that can stifle energy movement. Add some metal elements here – perhaps a coin collection or interesting metal ornament. Now locate the southeast portent and place a thriving plant and water feature.  Keep these polar opposites connected so the energy can freely pass and generate income to deposit in that checking account.

Points 4 & 5 ~ Friends are Coming Over to Celebrate too!

We all know entertaining doesn’t end with family.  Decorating and setting up for friends are also part of the holiday frenzy. Between the frequent entertaining and all those decorations, the fire element tends to move out of balance. Combine that with more advance theories of energy like flying star and you can potentially be in fire overload.  Try infusing a bit more earth to gently calm all that fire. Even better yet, place your elemental cure in the southwest portent so you begin to feel a bit more grounded while reinforcing the relationship with your friends!

Point 6 ~ Joy and Creativity in Gift Giving

Sometimes it’s nice to be creative in gift giving.  Why not make some of your own gifts and bring out the inner child that lies deep within. To help get you in the energetic mode, locate the western portent of the home and place some earth and metal elements there along with an object that makes your heart sing.

Point 7 ~ Time for Travel

The holidays can also be a time for lots of travel whether we are visiting family, friends, or taking that needed vacation. To keep your cool with all the travel arrangements, make sure the northwest portent has some metal and earth elements and a heavenly image for safe travel.

Point 8 ~ Quietude, Meditation & Finding Self

One of the most important areas to pay attention to this holiday season and always is the northeast portent.  Here, the energy is about the inner calmness of spirit. Like the majestic mountain that stands tall resilient to the outer forces of nature, you too can be peaceful within to overcome the outer chaos. Find the northeast portent of your home and make sure there are plenty of earth elements with a touch of fire to build this naturally calm energy. Set up a meditation area with a comfortable floor cushion, incense, candles, and your favorite stones. Go there daily and come to breath – breathing in and out through your nose allowing belly to expand on the in breath and retract towards the back spine on the out breath.  This alone will do wonders for a stress –free holiday season.

Into the Winter - The Energy for December 2014

Into the Winter - The Energy for December 2014

The month of December generates the 7 red undermining star. This can be a difficult energy as this star reverts to its negative aspects in the current 8 Gen cycle we are in (2004 – 2014). There are tendencies for accusations, fighting, deception and robbery or theft. As this is a female trigram, then the aforementioned tendencies are exacerbated for females.

This star also represents intuition, spiritual or arcane matters. There is a creative and entertaining aspect to this star and so bare this in mind for this month. The teeth, skin, mouth and chest areas are vulnerable with this trigram star.

The analysis below is an interpretation of how this star, when moved into each direction reacts to the energy of the 8 portents.

Generalized Interpretation: Place cures in by December 7th and remove by January 5th.

Family & Health - East Portent:  This month the area of health and family interaction is influenced by the yellow 5 star. This is a highly problematic energy and especially for eldest male. There is  susceptibility to ailments with legs/tendons, feet or neck area. Furthermore, brushes with authority figures can occur. It is a very unsettled energy and therefore any major projects or decisions should be avoided if possible. There is a clash between the element guest to the host direction and thus family tension can also rise.

Suggested Cure: Strong bronze metal and ringing a strong bell or gong frequently along with virtual water. Remove cure by Jan. 5th.

Finances - Southeast: The white 6 star enters this portent and bodes well for networking and taking a leadership role in finances. Male energy is helpful in realizing financial gain so pay attention to male input. The combination to elemental direction can elicit vulnerability to head and chest area as well as hips. Female is most vulnerable.

Cure: Place virtual water such as seashells. You may remove by Jan. 5th.

Illumination & Goals - South:  The black 2 star enters the house of goals and mission in life and as it is not a beneficial star, these areas can be challenged this month. This star is problematic and can impact overall feelings of vitality especially for female. Feeling lethargic and unease in the stomach area is also a dynamic of this star especially as it is being fueled by the portent direction. Cardiovascular systems and eyes are also challenged this month and especially for female.

Cure: Place strong bronze metal element here to subdue this energy. Remove cure by Jan. 5th.

Friends & Relationships - Southwest: The 4 green wood star enters the portent of relationships and and friends for this month. As this star is not beneficial in the current 8 cycle, the ill effects may present such as disharmony in relationship with significant other or friends that can lead to tension.

This star does reflect qualities of literature and education so you may find yourself drawn to those aspects as well. Watch for pelvic and thigh region vulnerability as the portent direction is in challenge with this star's element.

Cure: Place fire element here to drain this combination energy.  Remove cure by Jan. 5th.

Creativity & Fun - West: The fire bright 9 star enters the house of creativity and enjoyment. This is a wonderful star when it comes to moving upward in business and career and especially for female. As it falls within the house of creativity, stick with unique ways to approach business this month. Cardiovascular system and eyes can be vulnerable as the portent direction causes this star to lose energy.

Cure: Place a virtual water and wood element in this direction and remove cures by Jan. 5th.

Networking & Mentors - Northwest: The 8 money star finds the house of the patriarch, networking, potential wealth and travel. This star is fantastic and catapults potential increase in finances. This is very powerful especially for male and triggers to wealth portent in the polar direction (southeast). This is a month to really pay attention to male input in business and career for financial stability. Shoulders and arms may be sore this month due to draining effects of portent direction.

Cure: Place fire element here to ease the draining effect the portent has on this star. Also add moving water and financial resource files. Remove cures by Jan. 5th.

Career - North: Upward mobility and action of new ideas and projects when it comes to career and especially with males. This is a very active star and so many times the energy moves too quickly which can bring about windfalls but also tension and distress. Arguments can ensue as a result and especially between males.

Cure: The element of fire is best to drain this over active energy.  Remove fire cure by Jan. 5th.

Self - Cultivation - Northeast: The 1 white star enters the house of wisdom and knowledge this month. This is a beneficial star and can reveal promotion for young male but some anxiety and moodiness can also present.  The urinary and bladder systems are vulnerable and especially for male this month.

Cure: Place a metal element here and remove by Jan. 5th.

Central Palace: As mentioned in the beginning of this report, the month of December generates the 7 red undermining star. This can be a difficult energy as this star reverts to its negative aspects in the current 8 Gen cycle we are in (2004 – 2014). There are tendencies for accusations, fighting, deception and robbery or theft. As this is a female trigram then the aforementioned tendencies are exacerbated for females.

This star also represents intuition, spiritual or arcane matters. There is a creative and entertaining aspect to this star and so bare this in mind for this month. The teeth, skin, mouth and chest areas are vulnerable with this trigram star.

The star receives energy from the position of center and as a result can cause fights and trouble overall for the month. Also watch for theft and female upsetting the family.

Cure: Virtual water element is the best choice for cure here. You may remove cure by Jan. 5th.
