In just a few short days the fall equinox will arrive. It is the astronomical start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. The word "equinox" literally means "equal night." Astronomically, the sun crosses the "celestial equator" so the two hemispheres (north and south), receive the sun's rays equally. The sun is positioned overhead at noon from a point of the equator. From this point, the amount of daytime and nighttime are relatively equal to each other. From this point forward, until the winter solstice, the nights are longer and days are shorter.
The foliage changes color due to the amount of daylight and photosynethesis that occurs. With shorter days or less sunlight, there is a chemical process that occurs causing leaves to change color and finally drop off into the gentle breeze.
From a feng shui perspective, the energy pulls inward. It is a contractive energy like that of metal. Areas of our life that are accentuated are our creativity, travel, mentoring and spirituality. You may notice the shift taking place already. For me, it is a trip to India for a Pilgrimage.
This is also the time of year when vatta (air) is on the rise. The tendency to feel "floaty" or ungrounded is likely. Therefore, it behooves you to engage in grounding practices such as yoga, meditation, tai chi or gigong. Paying attention to your environment and incorporating more earth and metal elements bodes well to keep you grounded and intuitive.
The upcoming autumnal solstice is a wonderful time to engage in an outdoor ceremony. There are so many different ways to welcome in the change of season. There isn't any right or wrong way to do this. Later this week I will post one of my favorite ceremonies. How you decide to acknowledge the change of season is up to you, but one thing you should definitely consider is clearing your internal and external environment. My simple space clearing ceremony E-book (part of my feng shui mini-series), is stacked with helpful ways to refresh the energy in your environment and enhance it elementally through specific feng shui aspects.
